Discover the Wonders of an Ocean Safari in La Ventana: A Family-Friendly Adventure
La Ventana is a town two hours from Cabo San Lucas where we go to find more marine life and very chill environment that we don´t have in Cabo. Is a paradise for marine enthusiastic and families seeking unforgettable adventures. It´s well known for the rich marine biodiversity and quiet environment. This destination offers a unique ocean safari experience. The last years in Baja California Sur this kind of activity became a big attraction because if give the time to be at the sea enjoying while searching for marine life to have a beautifull encounter with them if the chances are on our favor and the animals stay interacting and willing to give part of their space for human curiosity. A big difference between scuba diving or snorkeling is that we don´t go to an specific spot for the activity, we are just going somewhere with our eyes wide open looking with intrigue. Whether you are looking for dolphins, acrobatic mobula rays or encountering giant manta rays or whale sharks, La Ventana promises memories to last a lifetime. Here’s everything you need to know about this incredible adventure, perfect for families and small groups.

Not for any reason Jackes Cousteau used to research on this are during the sixties. Of course 70 years ago like anywhere there was more marine life as the commercial fishing wasn´t that issue, but there is still something here that creates a perfect area for all this combination of fish and cetaceans.
Why La Ventana is Perfect for Families
With its serene atmosphere, welcoming community, and unparalleled marine adventures, La Ventana is the ultimate destination for families seeking a meaningful connection with nature. Whether it’s your child’s first glimpse of a leaping mobula ray or a shared moment snorkeling with whale sharks, these experiences foster a love for the ocean and its inhabitants.
What You Can Experience on an Ocean Safari in La Ventana
- Encounters with Mobula Rays (April to June): From April to June, La Ventana becomes a stage for one of nature’s most spectacular shows: the aggregation of mobula rays. These graceful creatures can often be seen leaping out of the water in synchronized displays, captivating onlookers with their acrobatics. This is a must-see phenomenon for families, offering a thrilling yet educational experience for kids and adults alike. I have seen this aggregations many years ago while working in the pacific coast in Costa Rica but never as we find them here in Baja California Sur and specially in the Golf of California or Sea of Cortez. Some videos you can find on the instagram account says a lot but let´s try to describe it with words. I´m still amazed when I remember it when the water is crystal it can get like non stop highway with rays like if they where in a race for food or mating wich probably that´s the case. The safaris gives you the chance to be right there with this gian aggregations of mobulas either from surface or if you are a regular freediver you can dive a few feets down and see them closer. They are a little shy so we try to go down on a gentle way always on the side of the aggregation and we don´t interfere on their path but many times they might change directions. I highly recomen to see them in many positions because when you are looking at them from the bottom on a shallow sandy bottom you find all the belly colours, from the sides different and from the top another perspective. Also people can find out the missunderstanding of rays, specially the stingrays that since Stever Irwin dead regular people still ask if they can kill you. Well this family of rays don´t stink so “no”, this are filter feeders animales eating somehow as whales but are different species of animals.
- Dolphin Sightings: Dolphins are frequent companions during ocean safaris in La Ventana. Their playful behavior and synchronized swimming delight visitors of all ages. Watch them ride the boat’s wake or leap into the air, creating unforgettable photo opportunities and cherished memories for your family. La Ventana this time of the year is an expedition area where we jump in our panga with some snacks and water, good friends and vibes and go out looking for anything unexpected. Dolphins are some of the cetaceans we always see there. We find bottlenose and commons dolphins the most usual there and in rare ocassion we can see white side dolphins. Still dolphins as they have their complet socials tructure are not very easy to interact with us but some days can be a glory when we can see them in their natural habitat spendind some curiosity with us. We see some babies really small and they are really intelligent.

Unique Marine Encounters
- Whale Sharks: Known as the gentle giants of the sea, whale sharks are a highlight of any ocean safari. Snorkeling alongside these majestic creatures in nearby La Paz is an awe-inspiring experience that offers a safe and family-friendly adventure. The season in La Paz starts from december to april next to Espiritu Santo Island, but still while we are in La Ventana on the ocean safari we always have the chance to spot the biggest fish on earth. My best experiences with this fish were incredible. I had two of them around me and they were the same size like brothers, you couldn´t tell the difference. But if we are interested on this animals we can tell what differences they have. That is called fish id and we can see the head different spots they have it´s a unique pattern like human fingerprints. They are filter feeder animals like whales except that this first one are a fish but the name comes from the huge side this fish have and the way they eat filtering as whales. I have also seen smaller whale sharks as may be 12 feet and I remember this one particulary used to be very curious with all divers comming next to us many times, like nothing to fear about.
- Manta Rays at La Reina: La Reina, a nearby marine hotspot, is famous for its encounters with giant manta rays. Glide through the water alongside these elegant creatures, an experience that fosters a deep appreciation for marine life. During the summer when the water gets warmer and clear this area that has some sealions on top of it also has so much life. The top animal to spot are giant manta rays. We don´t them in aggregations like the mobulas, I woulnd´t imagine something like that but I have seen a group of seven giant manta while trying to mate. They form this called train of love where the males are all behind the female copying every movement she does. What is this about? Well, this can happen for a long time and it´s an interaction previous to mating when there is a definition of who is going to be the lucky male. After time goes on and they are swiming, jumping avery thing she does some of them go away and at one moment only one is still chasing this female manta ray. That´s the one with the higher chances to mate with this female. Manta rays also like the belly bubbles. We tryed that when we are scuba diving and we believe it´s like someone touching our head and we fall asleep, for them it could be something like this. They are fascinating intelligent as they have the biggest brain in proportion to their body and we see that on many interactions we have with them.
- Cetaceans: La Ventana’s waters are home to a variety of cetaceans, including humpback whales, pilot whales, and even orcas. While sightings are not guaranteed, the possibility of encountering these magnificent animals adds excitement to every trip. The cetaceans are marine mammals that has adapted to live their life houndred percent in the water. We have allready mentioned dolphins which are cetaceans but let´s see a little more about some others. During the december to april the most common are the humpback whales and for that we do whale watching tours but in Cabo San Lucas we can see many more from the boat. Also grey whales that depending on the different water currents some years we can see some more. If the water in the north is not that cold they might not migrate that much south and viceverse. Orcas are some of the apex predators we would like to see while we are in a safari and on the last years we started to see them more and more often. May be beacause now we are looking for them. The biggest volume of orcas are more in the poles but still they are everywhere and they have adapted and learned to hunt and eat different according where they live. Still there is not to much study about the Baja California Sur orcas as the population in the north east pacific. Something I had the chance to do and I always wanted was seeing this animal face to face in the ocean to find out how was it. It is a little scary specially if the water is not that clear but the incidents with orcas have been in aquariums where they are in captivity and they are also bigger dolphins. As I wasn´t afraid to dolphins why would I be scared of orcas I thought? Even a dolphing can cause us harm but they don´t because we are not in their menu.

Why Choose a Private Boat Tour in La Ventana?
- Customized Itineraries: Focus on the marine life you’re most excited to see. When we go out on the ocean safari we decide and get on the same page about the interests we have on this tour such as if we want to focus on mobula rays and stick to them getting into the water as many possible times. May be we really like seeing dolhing and that´s our primer gold. Or we can decide going more outside of Cerralvo Island like into the blue looking for rare ocassions where we could spot different kind of cetaceans, like blue whales, sperm whales, orcas, anything, everything is unexpected when we are in La Ventana. Still me always have time enought for going everywehere and iterecting with all marine life.
- Safety and Comfort: Perfect for families with young children. As we go on the ocean safaris with space enought for 6 to 8 persons are quiet confortable and as we have food on the boat we can take some time on bow hanging and spoting the dolphins while they follow the boat.
- Flexible Timing: Spend more time at your favorite spots. We can decide at lunch time if we want to east while on the boat still looking for marine life or just stop and have lunch on the boat or either go down to Cerralvo Island to walk and eat. It´s all what we fell on this safaris.
The Best Time for an Ocean Safari in La Ventana
While La Ventana offers marine adventures year-round, the months between April and June are particularly special due to the mobula ray migration. During this period, you’ll witness incredible marine activity, with warmer waters attracting a variety of sea life. Beyond this season, the calm waters and rich biodiversity of La Ventana make it a prime location for ocean safaris at any time of year.
Nevertheless the winter -december to march- even that we can alwas find big marine life the water gets colder and visibility could be not that good but we can still enjoy from the boat observing marine life and lanscape. Also we can whale watch from the boat in La Ventana. In fact this 2025 the water is colder and we eve found grey whales in La Ventana, some other Humback whales. I would consider it a great and different chill area to spend time.
